A polydactyl Maine Coon is a Maine Coon cat with extra toes on its paws, a naturally occurring mutation that was common in early cats of the breed. This trait is not a health issue and is recognized by organizations like TICA in a separate show category. Some cat fanciers refer to these cats as "ship's cats" due to the belief that the larger paws helped with balance and hunting on ships.
Key characteristics
-
Extra toes: Polydactyl Maine Coons can have extra toes on one or more paws, sometimes up to seven on each foot.
-
"Mitten" or "snowshoe" paws: The extra toes can create a "mitten" or "snowshoe" appearance, with the extra digits being added on the inner "thumb" side of the paw.
-
Genetic trait: The trait is inherited and is a naturally occurring variation.
-
No health concerns: When bred responsibly, polydactyly is simply a physical variation and does not cause health problems.
-
Structural integrity: A healthy polydactyl Maine Coon will have straight legs and paws, with every toe making contact with the ground when walking. Any issues with turned-in legs are due to poor breeding, not the extra toes themselves.
-
Nail care: The only minor challenge may be keeping the extra nails managed, as there are more of them, and they can sometimes become overgrown if not trimmed.
